Schools Wish List:
When schools open their doors again this month, the Hampden Community Council Education Committee wants children, parents/guardians, and educators to know that the Hampden community places a high value on education. The Education Committee has been working diligently this summer to fulfill the wish lists that schools provided, make contact with school principals, and find creative ways to support our public schools. This summer's accomplishments include:

--Gathering a wish list from all Hampden-based public schools;

--Collecting donations from generous community members, including paper, scissors, rugs, office supplies, and hundreds of tennis balls to put on the legs of chairs;

--Volunteering at Independence School #1 (formerly known as Community Learning for Life), painting classrooms, cleaning up the exterior, and donating labor and supplies to build a new kitchen for their catering project;

--Helping schools identify grant opportunities;

--Distributing information on back-to-school events;

--Meeting with principals to offer support;

--Meeting with the Hampden Village Merchants Association to find mutually beneficial ways to appreciate our educators.

Financial Donations Needed:
One of the "wish list" items from Hampden Pre-K-8 that caught our eye was a request for a snowblower. This request came from the custodian of the school, who often spends the night on the prediction of snow so that he can assure that there is a safe path to the school. The Education Committee is working with Falkenhan's Hardware to purchase a snowblower for this dedicated man, and we are half-way to meeting our financial goal. If you are interested in making a donation, please make the check payable to Hampden Community Council, put "snowblower donation" in the memo field, and send it to HCC at PO Box 19957 Baltimore MD 21211.

A New Beginning
Independence School Local 1

By Robin Shepherd
Member of the Education Committee

Think about Hampden, how it has grown and how it is changing. Imagine what it was like when you were a child. The summer was coming to a close and a new school year was beginning. Do you remember the new faces in your class and the old friends who had been your classmates for years? The schools in our neighborhood are always changing, always exciting, because of the students that attend them. In a few weeks school will be back in session. Where will your children or your childrenˆ¢s children attend school? This is an exciting time of year for the children and youth in Hampden. It is a fresh start and a new beginning for them.

This year the Hampden community has a new school. Well¬…maybe not a new school, but a newly named school. The Independence School Local 1 is in our neighborhood and it is exciting! This school is located across from the Robert Poole School. The school is open to 9th ˆ 12th grade students and 75% of the students attending this school live right here in Hampden. As an 8th grade student you can choose to attend the Independence School. Forty students attend this school. Next year they will be adding an additional 40 students. If more than 40 apply, a lottery will determine who can attend the Independence School. So come January¬…you will want to sign-up early and list the Independence School Local 1 as your first choice of high schools to attend.

The average class size is 14 so each student receives individualized attention. The Independence Local School 1 is different than most schools in this area. As a student you will learn about the usual subjects such as Math, English, and History, but then you will spend most of your time learning by experience, or experiential learning. In an average week you may cater a meal for the entire school, produce a film documentary, or learn how to survive in the wilderness during a wilderness art trip. Some days you may spend the day in Annapolis learning about the government, or spend the afternoon repairing a bike so you can ride it as part of the sports program. Students have a chance to serve their community during service learning days and have the opportunity to complete an internship while in high school. Opportunity abounds at the Independence School Local 1 in Hampden.

For more information or to enroll please contact Helen Atkinson at hatkinson@bcps.k12.md.us  or call the school at (410) 467-1090. There are no entrance requirements to enroll. Prospective students will be required to attend a shadow day and write an essay about their experience. A parent student meeting is then scheduled to make sure that the Independence Local School 1 is right for your child, or your childrenˆ¢s children.
