Clean & Green Committee
Who we are: The Clean & Green Committee seeks to make Hampden a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live, work, and play, while promoting individual responsibility for the community environment. Our volunteers have organized cleanups, planted street trees, created a trash/recycling flyer for newcomers, developed a Parks Partnership to preserve green space in our neighborhood, and are involved in many ongoing projects. We hope you'll join us. ![]()

Single Stream Recycling and Alley Pick Up
In January of this year single stream recycling went in to effect in Baltimore City.
Single Stream recycling, or mixed recycling as some call it, is a system of recycling that allows you to put all of your recycling material into one bin saving you time, and hopefully, making it easier for everyone to recycle. Since Single Stream was introduced at the beginning of this year, the City has seen a 13% increase in tonnage collected for residential recycling pick up. Although that is a wonderful start, the Mayor’Äôs Office wondered if the city could do even better. So the Mayor’Äôs Office called a meeting with DPW, the Baltimore Community Foundation and neighborhood representatives from around the City to discuss ways in which we could all help to dramatically increase recycling rates in the city.
On April 9th, 2008, I attended that meeting and took part in a discussion about how a proposed city-neighborhood recycling partnership program might help increase recycling to the City’Äôs goal of 100% participation. Baltimore City believes that community organizations can play a key role in outreach and education about recycling, as well as serve as neighborhood-based sites for things like bin sales and program information. The first thing that the HCC did to help reach the City’Äôs goal of 100% participation was to work with the City and local businesses to make recycling bins more accessible. You can now purchase your City approved yellow bins and cans at Falkenhans Hardware and the Mill Valley Garden Center & Farmer’Äôs Market. Both neighborhood businesses are providing the bins at the City’Äôs cost. The 18-gallon bins are $5.00,and the 25-gallon cans are $12.00. For those of you that have been looking for a lid for your recycling can, they will be made available later on this year and will fit the 25-gallon can that has been being sold since January. In other recycling news, those of you that were in attendance at the March HCC meeting know that we discussed asking the city to return recycling pick up to the alleys, instead of having us put it out in our front yards. Many residents agreed that alley pick up was more desirable both aesthetically and logistically. After speaking with Celeste Amato who works for the office of the Mayor’Äôs Initiative for a cleaner Greener Baltimore, I was informed that the cities efforts to dramatically increase recycling participation have, in an ironic twist, forced pick up to curb side in some areas because of the larger trucks being used to accommodate the ever increasing volume of recycling. The simple truth is that many of our alleys here in Hampden will not accommodate the larger city trucks. The City moved the pick to the fronts of houses to minimize the amount of property damage that was occurring by trying to squeeze a big truck down a tiny alley. The City has however agreed to re-evaluate the pick up locations here in Hampden. If you currently have curbside pick up and think that you would be better served by having that pick up moved to your alley, please send us an e-mail or letter stating Your Name, Phone Number, Your house address and state that that you would like your recycling pick up moved back into your ally. We will forward all requests to Tonya Simmons, Baltimore City’Äôs Recycling Coordinator. Please keep in mind that on some streets recycling pick up will need to stay curbside, but the City has agreed to move it to the alleys where it can. Send your email requests to hcczoning@gmail.com
